South Dum Dum Municipality
In 1870 Dum Dum was divided into two parts named as South Dum Dum and North Dum
Dum. Though South Dum Dum Municipality was constituted on 3rd July, 1870 yet it was in
fact known as ‘Bagjola Municipality upto 14m March, 1880. The responsibility of this
Municipality lied on the provincial Government. At present its office was in the area of

This Town is about 90 miles away from the mouth of the river o the eastern side of the
Gauges. The area of this Municipality was 15.19 Sq. Km. in 1911 its population was 12,874,
in 1971 the population was 1, 74,342 and in the year 1981 it gradually increases at 2, 27,578.
Year 1951-61 and 1961-71 the rate of growth of populating in these two decades were 81.27%
& 56.66% respectively. It is worth mentioning that according to census of 1981 it has been
revealed the literary percentage of South Dum Dum Municipality stands third amongst the
West Bengal Municipal Towns and whose percentage is 72.74.
